Beijing Air Still Murky As Olympic Village Opens
PlusBeijing Air Still Murky As Olympic Village OpensBeijing Air Still Murky As Olympic Village OpensThe Associated PressWith 12 days to go before the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, air pollution in the city is still one of the key problems the organisers need to tackle. Air pollution in the Chinese capital on Sunday almost completely hid the venues. (July 27)With the opening ceremonies of the summer Olympics just 12 days away, key Olympic venues in the host city Beijing are barely visible. It appears that dramatic efforts to clear the air in the Chinese capital haven't worked. More than a million and a half cars have been pulled off the streets. Factories have been closed. Construction has been largely halted. (NATS IN MANDARIN)A Chinese officials says much of the appearance of the air Sunday was a result of fog. He also says that once pollution has accumulated, it's hard to it to dissipate. Even the temporary homes for athletes were hard to see due to the murky air. The Olympic village opened Sunday in a colorful ceremony that included basketball star Yao Ming. 16-thousand athletes and officials will live in the sprawling complex. The village will contain a restaurant that can feed five-thousand people. There are teahouses, a barbershop, post office, a fire station, shopping and more. (NATS IN MANDARIN)Officials acknowledge the importance of improved air quality for the athletes. They promise to do what they can to ensure a good environment for endurance events. China has one of the world's fastest growing economies. But that growth has led to choking pollution. ___ ___, The Associated Press.

Cal Athletics in Beijing - Olympic Village (Part 7)
Jigar Mehta, a UC Berkeley alum, is in Beijing and capturing a behind the scenes look of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Here are some of his notes that correspond to the video. For more updates and information, please visit http://calbears.com ----------------- It's probably the most talked about place at the Olympic Games, and you can't scalp a ticket to get in, it's for Olympians only. The Olympic village is truly a mini village with housing for 16000 people, a massive dining hall, and lots of entertainment options for the athletes. However, the best part of the village is the opportunity to meet athletes from around the world, if your clever you could make enough friends that you would never have to pay for another hotel room when you travel! Everyone wants to know what it is like on the inside, and since I couldn't get into the village I gave Martin Maric (Discus-Crotia) and Amin Nikfar (Shot Put-Iran) a video camera for a day.
